Campus Safety Overview

Welcome & Mission

Welcome to the official Campus Safety Guru Overview Card. This card serves as the permanent single source of truth for all faculty, staff, and leadership regarding campus security operations, identification services, and emergency protocols.

The mission of Campus Safety is to ensure a safe, caring, and disciplined environment conducive to learning and teaching. We seek to maintain a welcoming climate free of violence, illegal drugs, and fear through proactive security measures, technological integration, and active partnership with students, faculty, staff, community leaders, and external emergency services. In addition to managing our campus safety and security program, the Campus Safety unit is also responsible for Card Services.

Strategic Governance & Structure

Effective Fall 2026, the Campus Safety unit will operate as a stand-alone unit reporting directly to the EVP for Business and Operations. This organizational alignment provides the department with clear accountability, direct oversight, and the flexibility needed to effectively manage campus safety operations and services.

In alignment with our commitment to institutional agility, safety protocols, and direct accountability, the department’s organizational alignment has been updated for Fall 2026:

Key Safety Modernizations & Initiatives

As an urban campus, we continuously enhance our protective security infrastructure. Recent improvements span several critical operational dimensions:

Access Control & Tap Access Tech Rollout

  • Classroom Upgrades: Phase two of the tap access infrastructure rollout is underway, equipping individual classroom doors with smart card readers for streamlined card validation and unified security protocol.

Digitzing Guest & Dormitory access

  • Guest Management: Sponsoring students, faculty, and staff can easily request guest access to academic facilities by submitting the official digital Guest Request Form.

Scenario Planning & Safety Training

  • Community Preparedness: Proactive tabletop exercises, threat vulnerability assessments, and regular scenario-based emergency testing are conducted regularly to prepare the university community.
  • Schedule a Training: Active shooter response drills, emergency response strategies, and tailored group safety seminars are available for any department or class by emailing campussafety@newschool.edu.

Departmental Units & Functions

Campus Safety (Security Operations)

  • 24/7 Desk Coverage: Stationed campus security guards maintain continuous visual deterrence, access monitoring, and physical patrols at every university entrance and residence hall.
  • Incident Response & Law Enforcement Liaison: Coordinates directly with the NYPD, FDNY, EMS, and federal emergency agencies to report, investigate, and handle campus disruptions or medical incidents.
  • Emergency Communications: Manages mass notification systems, emergency dispatch channels, and the official university mobile safety app.

Campus Card Services (newcard)

  • Official Identification Cards: Responsible for issuing official New School ID cards (Newcard) to all enrolled students, active faculty, and staff.
  • Access Management: Coordinates physical access permissions for university buildings, and manages Newcard Cash accounts and Dining Dollars programs.
  • Community Benefits: Establishes custom merchant partnerships to provide specialized discounts to student and staff ID cardholders.
  • Contact Info:

Lost & Found Operations

  • Central Depository: Managed directly from the Campus Safety Office on the Mezzanine level of 68 Fifth Avenue. All discovered items turned over to on-duty security personnel are logged and securely held here.
  • Disposal Policy: Claims must be verified within a strict three-month retention window; unclaimed items are systematically donated to non-profit charitable organizations or disposed of in accordance with campus policy.

Essential Safety Processes & Guidelines

Accessing the Streamlined Campus Guest Request Form

  • Digital Submission: Sponsoring students, faculty, and staff can easily request guest access to academic facilities by submitting the official digital Guest Request Form.
  • Bulk Building & Multi-Guest Entry: Sponsors can select multiple buildings in a single application. The form supports pasting guest name lists directly into an expanding field (one guest per line).
  • Formatting Best Practice: Enter the first and last name of each guest exactly. Do not include titles, middle initials, suffixes, or email addresses, as this will trigger database delays.
  • Guest ID Verification: Approved guest names are transmitted automatically to safety desk access sheets. Advise your guests to present a valid government-issued photo ID upon arrival to verify their identity before building entry. Sponsoring hosts are directly responsible for their guests’ conduct on campus.

Campus Safety App (Mobile Access)

  • Essential Safety Companion: Access immediate emergency resources, campus safety emergency 24 hour line.
  • Friend Walk Feature: A key personal transit helper that allows real-time virtual monitoring of your walking path by a designated contact.
